The Post-Offer Visit Day Committee
The Post-Offer Visit Day Committee (aka Open Day Committee, or just “the Open Day Rep Team”) is comprised of all the Open Day Reps, led by the Head Open Day Reps and of course assisted by the JCR President and SCDO. The Open Day Reps’ responsibility is putting on the POVDs in February and March – opportunities for students currently holding an offer for Durham and who have been allocated to Butler to have a look around their university and college. The POVDs themselves are split into three day visits (one in February, two in March) and two residential overnight stays (two in March), and will ideally give all visitors a taste of life at Butler!
The day visits traditionally consist of two identical hour-long slots in which a few shorter activities are presented on a carousel – in previous years, these have included a tour of the college, a mini-Freshers’ Fair in the Howlands, talks on the JCR or accommodation delivered in the Old Shop, and other similar activities. The residential visits include afternoon-evening activities for the visitors (think quizzes, bingo, music in the bar, Tea and Toast etc.), including some time spent in their flats to cook their own evening meal – giving them valuable Butler self-catering experience! In the mornings, the Reps traditionally take the visitors down to their academic talks around Durham.
The Head Open Day Reps are elected in the 3rd JCR Meeting of Michaelmas Term, and the Open Day Rep application and selection process usually takes place early in Epiphany Term (late Jan/early Feb). Anyone can apply for either Head or normal Open Day Reps, and everyone is encouraged to do so – Open Day Repping is an absolutely thrilling and rewarding experience, you’ll bond with your fellow Reps and make new friends, and you’ll get a chance to show visitors what Butler is all about!
